UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
North Carolina State University School of Art & Design retired professor Jan-Ru Wan has been commissioned to lead seniors age 55 and older in creating a collective art installation, titled Up Close and Personal. Seniors will sew, stitch and screen print re-purposed clothing and other objects to create a work of art. This artwork will be permanently displayed at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Rd. in Chapel Hill. The project kicks off with a lecture by Professor Wan entitled “The Journey of Re-materialization” to be held at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center on Monday, January 9, 2012 from 10-11:00 am. This lecture will be repeated on Wednesday, January 11 at 6 pm. Both sessions are free and open to the public. Another way to be a part of the creative process is to donate clothes to be used in the artwork. Clothing can be brought to the Seymour Center on January 24th and 25th. Recording sessions of memories of donated garments are planned for January 24th, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, and January 25th from 11:00am-2:00pm. People donating clothing can meet with Dr. Wan and share the story of their clothes. These stories will become a part of the exhibit. A fun fashion show is also planned for May to celebrate the innovative reuse of old garments. There will be free workshops February 8th to the 15th to help those wishing to create a garment for the fashion show.
