ALL MY SONS
A business decision rocks a World War II era family, as this searing American masterpiece asks the questions - what are we responsible for, and who are we responsible to, in a time of war? This Pulitzer Prize-winning play speaks to us as clearly today as it did when it premiered in 1947. We’re proud to be among the first theatres given the rights to present this masterwork since Miller’s death four years ago.

BOOK DISCUSSION: THE HAPPINESS HYPOTHESIS
Join our discussion of The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom by Jonathan Haidt. Books can be borrowed from the Cybrary. Here is a description of the book: In his widely praised book, award-winning psychologist Jonathan Haidt examines the world's philosophical wisdom through the lens of psychological science, showing how a deeper understanding of enduring maxims-like Do unto others as you would have others do unto you, or What doesn't kill you makes you stronger-can enrich and even transform our lives. This is a book about ten Great Ideas. Each chapter is an attempt to savor one idea that has been discovered by several of the world’s civilizations - to question it in light of what we now know from scientific research, and to extract from it the lessons that still apply to our modern lives. It is a book about how to construct a life of virtue, happiness, fulfillment, and meaning. Here is a starred review of the book from Publisher's Weekly: The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, lamented St. Paul, and this engrossing scientific interpretation of traditional lore backs him up with hard data. Citing Plato, Buddha and modern brain science, psychologist Haidt notes the mind is like an "elephant" of automatic desires and impulses atop which conscious intention is an ineffectual "rider." Haidt sifts Eastern and Western religious and philosophical traditions for other nuggets of wisdom to substantiate—and sometimes critique—with the findings of neurology and cognitive psychology. The Buddhist-Stoic injunction to cast off worldly attachments in pursuit of happiness, for example, is backed up by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's studies into pleasure. And Nietzsche's contention that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger is considered against research into post-traumatic growth. An exponent of the "positive psychology" movement, Haidt also offers practical advice on finding happiness and meaning. Riches don't matter much, he observes, but close relationships, quiet surroundings and short commutes help a lot, while meditation, cognitive psychotherapy and Prozac are equally valid remedies for constitutional unhappiness. Haidt sometimes seems reductionist, but his is an erudite, fluently written, stimulating reassessment of age-old issues.

SOUTHERN VILLAGE HAS A HEART: VALENTINES EVENT
The businesses in Southern Village invite you to celebrate Valentines Day on Market Street, while also remembering the unfortunate earthquake victims in Haiti. Children and parents can walk around to 14 participating businesses on Market Street to collect treats and other goodies. Start at Harrington Bank, where each child can pick up a free treat bag, then proceed around the Village to all businesses with an identifying balloon for your goodies. The Tumble Gym will do something a little bit different that afternoon, offering each child a free half hour of Open Gym time. Just stop by, sign your child in, and enjoy 30 minutes to yourself while your child burns some energy in a safe environment! This might be the perfect opportunity to do a little bit of Valentines shopping on Market Street. To help celebrate the occasion, both Bloom and The Cottage Shop will be offering some Valentines Day special purchases. Note to husbands and boyfriends--this would be a great time to pick up a special little Valentine’s something for your wives or girlfriends! Most importantly however, the event will give us the chance to show our concern for the people of Haiti. Christ Church in Southern Village through its close association with The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), is accepting monetary donations. We are being assured that 100% of money donated to UMCOR for this purpose will go directly to helping the needy citizens in Haiti. When you and your children stop at the Church office (before 5:00) at 105 Market Street to pick up your goodies, you will also have an opportunity to donate to this wonderful cause. Please visit www.christmethodist.org/article/prayers--support-for-haiti/ to learn more about how your donation will help.

MCINTYRE’S AUTHOR EVENT: KATHLEEN GRISSOM
Kathleen Grissom visits to read from The Kitchen House. In 1790, Lavinia, a seven-year-old Irish orphan with no memory of her past, arrives on a tobacco plantation where she is put to work as an indentured servant with the kitchen house slaves. Though she becomes deeply bonded to her new family, Lavinia is also slowly accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. As time passes she finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds and when loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare and lives are at risk. The Kitchen House is a tragic story of page-turning suspense, exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail. This novel has been selected as a National Blue Ribbon Choice for the clubs (Literary Guild, Doubleday, etc) for March. Blue Ribbon Choices are new authors whose novel is chosen across all clubs as an extraordinary book selection - the only other titles selected for this are The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, The Help, The Little Giant of Aberdeen County, and Of Bees and Mist. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Kathleen Grissom is now happily rooted in south-side Virginia, where she and her husband live in the plantation tavern they renovated. The Kitchen House is her first novel.

SUSTAINABLE CINEMA SERIES:
A New Kind of Listening is witness to Chris Mueller-Medlicott’s early, unrecognized attempts to communicate, and to his journey from a lonely, withdrawn adolescent to co-director of the theater group. Over the course of a year, Chris, a young man who has never spoken a word and has been mislabeled profoundly mentally retarded, breaks through into stunning self-expression. Using intimate footage of rehearsals and performances, synthesized voice recordings of Chris’ words, archival home videos and interviews with cast members, the film is a remarkable record of events culminating in a performance of “The Song that Greens the Earth” at one of Raleigh’s most prestigious theaters.

COLORED CONFEDERATES AND UNITED STATES COLORED TROOPS
Many people find it hard to believe that any African American, slave or free, would have willingly served on the side of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. But Earl Ijames, a curator at the North Carolina Museum of History, says that hundreds did just that, and that their reasons for fighting were as varied and complex as those of white soldiers. These black soldiers, as well as the blacks who served the Union cause, will be the topic of a presentation by Mr. Ijames, sponsored by the Chatham County Historical Assn. Free and open to the public.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
Absolutely one of the funniest comedies in the English language. Wicked wit and dead-on social satire wrapped in a Victorian confection of dual identities, matters matrimonial and the provenance of a particularly pertinent handbag. Between the laughs, Wilde's dazzling wordplay delivers a subversive look at society’s hypocrisy. Pure enjoyment!

MANILA MEMORIES
Four boyhood friends rediscover one another at a class reunion. They begin reminiscing about a shared time long ago and far away - WWII, the South Pacific, Manila in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation and the liberation. Please join the Friends for Manila Memories, a fascinating look at the recollections of four European boys caught up in the winds of war, and how those unique memories became a book. Juergen Goldhagen was six years old when he and his mother left Germany to join his Jewish father who had immigrated to Manila in response to impending war. Now a resident of Fearrington Village, Juergen was the moving force behind the creation of Manila Memories and editor of the narratives of the four classmates that describe life before, during, and after the epic battle to liberate Manila. Together they paint a mural of wartime Manila as seen through the boyish eyes of ill-fated innocents. Program Chair Gary Simpson will lead an informal discussion with Juergen Goldhagan about the lives of the four boys during those dangerous days and how the book was brought to life. (This program was re-scheduled from original date of Feb. 2).
