THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
Absolutely one of the funniest comedies in the English language. Wicked wit and dead-on social satire wrapped in a Victorian confection of dual identities, matters matrimonial and the provenance of a particularly pertinent handbag. Between the laughs, Wilde's dazzling wordplay delivers a subversive look at society’s hypocrisy. Pure enjoyment!

MANILA MEMORIES
Four boyhood friends rediscover one another at a class reunion. They begin reminiscing about a shared time long ago and far away - WWII, the South Pacific, Manila in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation and the liberation. Please join the Friends for Manila Memories, a fascinating look at the recollections of four European boys caught up in the winds of war, and how those unique memories became a book. Juergen Goldhagen was six years old when he and his mother left Germany to join his Jewish father who had immigrated to Manila in response to impending war. Now a resident of Fearrington Village, Juergen was the moving force behind the creation of Manila Memories and editor of the narratives of the four classmates that describe life before, during, and after the epic battle to liberate Manila. Together they paint a mural of wartime Manila as seen through the boyish eyes of ill-fated innocents. Program Chair Gary Simpson will lead an informal discussion with Juergen Goldhagan about the lives of the four boys during those dangerous days and how the book was brought to life. (This program was re-scheduled from original date of Feb. 2).

MCINTYRE’S AUTHOR EVENT: WAYNE CALDWELL
Wayne Caldwell visits McIntyre’s to read from Requiem By Fire. This moving second novel of family and home begins in 1928, when the National Park Commission is instructed to amass half a million acres of private property in North Carolina and Tennessee to hand over to the federal government. Attorney Oliver Babcock and Horace Wakefield are the two outsiders charged with the difficult task of presenting the inhabitants of Cataloochee – a village situated deep in the Great Smoky Mountains – with two choices. They can sell outright for a certain sum and move immediately or sell at a reduced price and stay until they pass away, so long as they do not violate restrictions – restrictions which severely limit their very way of life. Some eleven hundred souls live in Cataloochee, including many prosperous farmers whose ancestors broke the first furrows early in the nineteenth century. While some Cataloochee natives, like the crotchety and stubborn Silas Wright, are deeply embedded in their rural ways, others are ready to embrace a new and modern life, including Velda Parham, the tall 21-year-old postmistress with her eye on Oliver. The Hawkins clan – with Jim, a father born in Cataloochee and working for the National Park Commission and Nell, an unhappy mother eager to leave – is just one of the families who must consider change as a result of the ultimatum. Even as a growing number of denizens leave the area, a deranged pyromaniac by the name of Willie McPeters lurks in the background, threatening those who remain. With humor and pathos, Requiem By Fire is a fine example of Southern storytelling and transports readers to a remarkable time in Appalachia, where roots and family are at stake.

MCINTYRE’S AUTHOR EVENT: LARRY BAKER
Larry Baker visits to read from A Good Man. Harry Ducharme is at the end of his rope. Booze and bad decisions have taken him from the A-list of talk radio fame down to a tiny cinder-block station, WWHD, in St. Augustine, Florida. He talks, mostly to himself, from 10pm to 2am. Not sure anybody is listening, reading books and poetry that he likes, not caring if anyone agrees with him, playing golden-oldies from the sixties, and wondering how he got there. Above all, he is convinced he is not a good man. Then, as a hurricane pounds north Florida, Harry gets a visitor. An old black man who calls himself Peter Prophet, announcing the imminent arrival of a New Child of God. Harry is a bit skeptical, and his role in the New Child’s arrival eventually becomes intertwined with politics, Iraq, 9/11, old-time religion, and classic American literature from writers like Flannery O'Connor and Emily Dickinson, as well as the music of Harry Chapin. A good man is always hard to find, but Harry Ducharme finally succeeds as he meets the New Child of God in a final and unforgettable scene of death and redemption. Larry Baker is the author of The Flamingo Rising which was adapted by Hallmark for a television movie. He currently resides in Iowa City, Iowa.

5:00pm--RECEPTION. 5:45pm--PROGRAM. In the 1960s and 1970s, folklorist Bill Ferris toured his home state of Mississippi, documenting the voices of African Americans as they spoke about and performed the diverse musical traditions that form the authentic roots of the blues. His recently published book, "Give My Poor Heart Ease," presents the artistically and emotionally rich voices from this invaluable documentary record. Here are the stories of blues musicians who represent a wide range of musical traditions--from one-strand instruments, bottle blowing, and banjo, to spirituals, hymns, and prison work chants. Ferris's photographs of the musicians and their communities illustrate the book and are presented in an exhibition in Davis Library. Free and open to the public.

MCINTYRE’S AUTHOR EVENT: ANSIE BAIRD
McIntyre’s hosts author Ansie Baird to read from In Advance of All Parting. “In Ansie Baird's debut collection In Advance of All Parting, the winner of the fourteenth annual White Pine Press Poetry Prize, formal feeling and Baird's own grief-tempered voice lead us from the fissures of legacy and marriage, through the epiphanies of art and the sorrows of loss, to the "wild interiority" of her own spirit. Although Baird has been one of the Buffalo area's most highly regarded and widely published poets over the past three and a half decades, In Advance of All Parting is her first full-length collection. Half a lifetime in the making, this book is well worth the wait.” - RD Phol, The Buffalo News. Ansie Baird holds degrees from Vassar College and SUNY Amherst where she received her MA in English and won first prize in the University’s Academy of American Poets contest. She is Poet in Residence and a part-time English teacher at The Buffalo Seminary, a non-sectarian secondary school in Buffalo, where she has taught for the past twenty five years. She has also taught for Just Buffalo Literary Center in their Writers In Education program for the past twenty two years, conducting workshops in elementary, middle and high schools in the Buffalo area. Her work has been published in The Paris Review, Western Humanities Review, The Southern Review, The Denver Quarterly, Poetry Northwest, The South Dakota Review, The Quarterly, The Recorder and a number of other journals.

MCINTYRE’S AUTHOR EVENT: ANASTASIA HOBBETT
McIntyre’s welcomes Anastasia Hobbett to read from Small Kingdoms. The interwoven structure of this book traces the lives of people with markedly different histories and was inspired during the five years the author spent in Kuwait (1995-2000), the “peaceful” period between the Gulf wars. While observing this fascinating transitional time, she lived in an old and traditional Kuwaiti neighborhood. She began this novel in the years after 9/11, motivated in part to portray something she found missing in the media coverage of the Middle East: how ordinary people there pursue their lives. Anastasia Hobbet lived in Kuwait for five years where she studied the language, art and culture of the Islamic world. A former freelance journalist, she is at work on her third novel, The Lost Art of Blue. She lives in the San Francisco Bay area.

MCINTYRE’S AUTHOR EVENT: TODD JOHNSON
Todd Johnson returns to McIntyre’s to discuss The Sweet By and By, now in paperback. Among the longleaf pines and family farms of eastern North Carolina, days seem to pass without incident for Margaret Clayton and Bernice Stokes until they discover each other in a friendship that will take them on the most important journey of their lives. Rich with irresistible characters whose uniquely musical voices overflow the pages, The Sweet By and By is a testament to the truth that the most vibrant lives are not necessarily the most visible ones. Todd Johnson grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, the great-grandson of a rural Baptist preacher. After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill with honors in history and receiving his master’s degree from Yale Divinity School, Johnson moved to New York City to pursue a career as a musician. He has performed and/or recorded with a long roster of major artists, including Garth Brooks, Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Marc Anthony, Barry Manilow, Al Jarreau, Michael Bolton, Sarah Brightman, and Natalie Cole. MCINTYRE’S AUTHOR EVENT: SUSAN REBECCA WHITE
Susan Rebecca White visits McIntyre’s to read from A Soft Place To Land. For more than ten years, Naomi and Phil Harrison enjoyed a marriage of heady romance, tempered only by the needs of their children. But on a vacation alone, the couple perishes in a flight over the Grand Canyon. After the funeral, their daughters, Ruthie and Julia, are shocked by the provisions in their will. Spanning nearly two decades, the sisters’ journeys take them from their familiar home in Atlanta to sophisticated bohemian San Francisco, a mountain town in Virginia, the campus of Berkeley, and lofts in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As they heal from loss, search for love, and begin careers, their sisterhood, once an oasis, becomes complicated by resentment, anger, and jealousy. It seems as though the echoes of their parents’ deaths will never stop reverberating—until another shocking accident changes everything once again. Susan Rebecca White was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a graduate of Brown University and holds a master of fine arts in creative writing from Hollins University. She lives with her husband in Atlanta.
